The Heart Behind My Work: Why I Started Valor K9 Academy Dog Training
“Sending our dog to Valor K9 Academy was the best decision we ever made. We went from feeling overwhelmed and unsure to confident and connected. The transformation was incredible—not just in our dog, but in us as owners.”
—Emily R., Boise, ID
Since 2014, Valor K9 Academy dog training has been more than just obedience—it’s about building trust, respect, and lifelong connection. When I started this business, I didn’t set out to be like every other trainer. I wanted to create a place where structure meets compassion and where both dogs and their owners feel understood.
Before Valor K9 Academy was ever a business, it was a calling.
It started with Lady, the sweet Collie I rescued as a kid. She was gentle, smart, and loyal—and from the first walk around the block, I felt a connection that would shape the rest of my life. I didn’t know it then, but I was already developing the foundation for what would become my life’s work: understanding dogs, building trust, and helping them reach their potential.
Fast forward through military service, years of hands-on experience, and thousands of dogs later, and that same spark is still at the heart of everything we do at Valor K9 Academy. Founded in 2014, Valor was born out of a desire to fill a gap in the dog training world—a place where structure meets compassion, where dogs are trained with clarity, and where owners are respected and empowered.
What Sets Us Apart
Our mission is simple but powerful: to build strong, confident dogs and equally confident owners.
We’re not just training obedience—we’re transforming relationships. We use balanced training methods, which means we believe in rewarding the behaviors we want to see more of, while also clearly correcting those we don’t. This creates calm, focused dogs who understand what’s expected of them and who want to work with their owners. It’s not about control—it’s about communication.
We tailor our training to the individual dog. Whether your pup is 8 weeks old and needs a strong foundation, or 3 years old with reactivity issues, we meet you where you are. We offer a range of programs—from puppy lessons and private sessions to our signature board and train programs—so no matter the challenge, there’s a path forward.
Over the years, Valor K9 Academy dog training has grown into a trusted name for balanced training with heart. What sets us apart is our belief that training is as much for the owner as it is for the dog.
Real Dogs, Results, and Stories.
Some of our most powerful moments have come through our Board & Train programs, where dogs stay with us for several weeks to receive immersive, personalized training. We’ve seen everything from leash reactivity, anxiety, and poor social skills to hyperactivity and confidence issues completely turn around.
- There was Scout, a young German Shepherd who barked and lunged at every person and dog he passed. After his board and train, he could walk calmly through the park, greet people politely, and ignore distractions. His owner told us, “I have a new dog—and a new level of confidence in myself.”
- Then came Luna, a rescue pup who had never been inside a house without panicking. In just three weeks, she learned to settle, focus, and bond with her owner for the first time. Watching her fall asleep peacefully on place for the first time brought tears to our eyes.
- And we’ll never forget Milo, the high-drive Lab who wouldn’t stop jumping, mouthing, and barking. With structure, consistency, and clear expectations, Milo became the calm, happy family companion his owners dreamed of.
These aren’t just success stories—they’re milestones in the lives of families who were struggling, frustrated, or even at the end of their rope. We’re honored to be the ones they trusted with their dogs.
Why I Built Valor K9 Academy Dog Training
Behind every training session is a deeper goal: to help dogs and owners thrive together. We believe training should be fair, firm, and kind. That dogs deserve clear leadership. And that owners deserve support, encouragement, and education—not judgment.
Running Valor K9 Academy isn’t just a job—it’s a mission. It’s early mornings, late nights, long days in the rain or snow, and more dog hair than you can imagine. It’s also the joy of watching a dog master “heel” for the first time… the relief in a client’s eyes when their dog finally comes when called… and the quiet pride that comes from seeing a once-anxious pup relax into a down-stay at your feet.
