If you’re wondering how to train your puppy to be a service dog, you’re not alone. Service dog training starts with a strong foundation in obedience, confidence-building, and socialization. In this guide, you’ll learn how to train your puppy to be a service dog step by step—from early preparation to advanced task work.

What Makes a Good Service Dog Candidate?

Before we jump into training details, it’s important to understand that not every dog is suited for service work. The best service dogs have specific temperament traits that set them up for success in public and task-based environments.

Ideal traits for a future service dog include:

Dogs who are overly shy, reactive, anxious, or extremely independent tend to struggle with the demands of service work. If you’re still in the process of selecting a puppy, reach out—we’re happy to help you assess temperament before bringing your dog home.

Step-by-Step: How to Train Your Puppy to Be a Service Dog with Valor K9 Academy

Our service dog training is broken down into three key phases. Each one builds on the last to prepare your dog for obedience, public access, and task-specific work.

Step 1: Puppy Training (2-6 months of age)

We start early with foundational training for service puppy prospects. This critical window is the best time to build good habits and confidence.

This stage focuses on:

  • Housebreaking & crate training
  • Socialization with people, dogs, sounds, and environments
  • Basic obedience (sit, down, come, leash skills)
  • Confidence-building games and structure

💡 Start Before Your Puppy Comes Home

Our online course—The Puppy Head Start Program—is the perfect way to begin your puppy’s training journey before they even arrive. It’s packed with practical tips and professional guidance, and it’s especially helpful for future service dogs. Military, law enforcement, and first responder discounts available.

Step 2: Obedience & Public Access Training (6-9 months of age)

Once your dog has a solid foundation, the next step is to polish obedience and prepare them for working in the real world.

This phase includes:

  • Advanced on- and off-leash obedience
  • Distraction training in public places (grocery stores, shopping centers, parks, etc.)
  • Public manners and confidence in high-traffic areas
  • Neutrality to people and other animals

Step 3: Task Training (9+ months of age)

The final phase of training focuses on specific tasks your dog needs to perform to assist you. These are personalized to your unique needs.

Common tasks include:

  • Deep pressure therapy
  • Medical alert or response
  • Retrieving dropped items
  • Guiding or mobility support

If you’re unsure which tasks might be appropriate, we’ll work with you to identify the right fit and develop a training plan accordingly. We’re with you every step of the way with expert guidance—from start to finish— on your service dog journey. Service dogs save lives, and we’re honored to be a part of the process for service dog teams and their families.

Training Options

While Board & Train is our most effective and comprehensive option for service dog training, we do offer private lessons as an alternative. These lessons allow you to work hands-on with your dog under our guidance. They’re great for owners who want to be closely involved in every step of the training process, but they require a bigger time investment and consistent follow-through.

If you’re unsure which option is best for you, we’re happy to talk through the pros and cons of each based on your lifestyle, availability, and goals.

Pay-As-You-Go Structure to Train Your Puppy to Be a Service Dog

Training a service dog is a process that takes time, and we’ve designed our program to make it manageable. Each phase is pay-as-you-go, with:

  • A deposit required to reserve your dog’s spot for each phase
  • The remaining balance due at the start of that phase

This structure allows you to budget and plan as you move through the stages of training.
