Are Tennis Balls Bad for Dogs? Safer Alternatives for Playtime
Are Tennis Balls Bad for Dogs?
One of the most popular toys for dogs is actually harmful! Tennis balls may seem fun, but they present serious hazards to your dog’s health. Here are the top three reasons you should stop using tennis balls:
1. Tennis balls can be a choking hazard
Dogs with strong jaws can pop tennis balls, making them extremely dangerous. Once split apart, the ball can block your dog’s airway, creating a life-threatening emergency.
2. Broken pieces can be ingested
Dogs who chew through tennis balls may swallow chunks of rubber or felt. These pieces can cause intestinal blockages that sometimes require expensive, emergency surgery to correct.
3. Tennis ball felt damages teeth
The felt on a standard tennis ball is abrasive like sandpaper. Over time, chewing wears down teeth, exposing roots and leading to painful dental issues. Dirt and grit stuck to the ball worsen the damage. Tooth extractions can cost hundreds, while advanced dental surgeries can reach thousands of dollars per tooth.
My Personal Experience
I used tennis balls with my dogs for years. Unfortunately, I didn’t stop until it was too late. My German Shepherd now has worn-down teeth, with a small amount of root exposed. Thankfully, it hasn’t required surgery—but it easily could have.
What to Use Instead
The good news is there are safe alternatives! I recommend rubber Chuck-It balls. They’re:
-
Gentle on your dog’s teeth
-
Nearly impossible to pop
-
Available in different sizes
👉 Always choose a ball larger than your dog’s throat to prevent choking. For example, I use XXL Chuck-It balls for my German Shepherd and Large Chuck-It balls for my Australian Shepherds.
Unfortunately, two of our clients lost their dogs because of standard tennis balls that were too small for large breeds. Both dogs choked, and their families were unable to remove the balls in time. Their tragic losses are a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of safe toy choices.

Final Thoughts
Play with your dogs, have fun, and enjoy fetch—but be safe. Throw away your tennis balls and switch to Chuck-It balls instead. Your dog’s health, teeth, and life are worth it.
Happy Training! 🐾
